The walrus can slow its heart rate to near stopping to survive the freezing temperatures of the Arctic Ocean. They live in massive herds, communicate in complex ways, and have been hunted for their ivory for centuries. Arctic sea ice loss is now their biggest threat — without ice to rest on between feeding dives, they are forced ashore in numbers that cause deadly stampedes. They are ancient, unhurried, and completely unbothered by us. We should return the favor.

The Icelandic sheep is one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world, largely unchanged since Norse settlers brought them to Iceland over a thousand years ago. They have survived volcanic eruptions, brutal winters, and centuries of isolation. They were here before most of what we've built and will outlast most of it too. There is something worth respecting in that kind of persistence.
